Glendale Hts. fest to include sports.(News)

Recreational activities at Glendale Heights Summerfest usually consist of lifting 16-ounce beverages or a sizzling grilled sandwich, and chasing children around to different carnival rides.
But the village this year will add a little cardiovascular workout with basketball, softball, soccer and sand volleyball games.
"We wanted to start some tournaments and Summerfest already has the name and respectability. We wanted to see if we could tie in something recreational," said Joelle Delgado-Solomon of the village's Sports Hub.
The tournaments will start on July 15, though some will extend to July 16, and playing times will depend on the number of teams registered in each category. Summerfest begins July 12.
All the tournaments will take place in Camera Park, where the village holds its annual festival, carnival and fireworks display.
Tournaments will include:
- Basketball - Three-member men's teams in age divisions for 14- or 15-year-olds, 16- or 17-year-olds, 18- to 34-year-olds and 35- year-olds and older. Entry fees are $75 per team if registered by June 30 and $100 beginning July 1. First prize is $100. All players get free T-shirts.
- Sand Volleyball - Coed teams will compete with three, four or six members. Divisions include 14- to 17-year-olds, and players 18 and older. Team fees are $100 by June 30 and $125 beginning July 1. First prize is $125. Players get a free T-shirt.
- Soccer - Three-member teams will compete in boys' or coed categories for players younger than 8, or younger than 10. Entry fees are $75 per team. First-place teams get a trophy and all players receive a free T-shirt.
- 16-inch Softball - Men's teams, with players at least 18 years old, pay a $150 entry fee and are guaranteed at least two games. First prize is $200.
