Arlington Hts. roadwork to force changes in traffic flow next week.(News)

Motorists who have been crawling and stalling through road construction in southern Arlington Heights could face a different set of headaches soon as workers reopen some lanes and close others.

As early as next week, workers will begin shifting traffic on some sections of the project, which involves Arlington Heights Road, Algonquin Road, Central Road and Golf Road.

The first changeover will be on Algonquin Road, where the freshly asphalted eastbound lanes could reopen next week, said Scott Soderstrom, resident engineer for the Illinois Department of Transportation.

IDOT's preliminary plan calls for only one westbound lane of Algonquin Road to be open during the new phase of construction. Both eastbound lanes would reopen.

The changeover could create traffic tie-ups as motorists adjust.

Some drivers got a taste of that Wednesday when work crews reduced Arlington Heights Road from three lanes down to two to make room for construction vehicles.

That could happen periodically next week around midday, although both southbound lanes and one northbound lane will be open at other times, Soderstrom said.

It could be weeks, however, before construction crews shift around the lane closures on Central and Golf roads, Soderstrom said.

On Central Road, crews continue to work on the eastbound lanes where new curbs and gutters are being installed. Both westbound lanes are open.

On Golf, crews still are working on the eastbound lanes and will be installing new driveway aprons there next week. Westbound lanes are open.
